Connecting Housing and Health
In the leadership message, PD&R associate deputy assistant secretary for research, evaluation, and monitoring Mark Shroder discusses the role of housing as a social determinant of health and describes the latest issue of Cityscape's examination of the topic. In a series of 10 original contributions, the issue's authors explore pertinent questions in public health and affordable housing policy. This issue of Cityscape was guest-edited by Veronica Helms Garrison of HUD and Craig Evan Pollack of the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

2018 AIA/HUD Secretary's Awards
At its national conference in New York City this June, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored the 2018 recipients of the AIA/HUD Secretary's Housing and Community Design Awards and the winners of AIA's Annual Housing Awards. The Secretary's Awards had two winners — one each in the Excellence in Affordable Housing Design and the Housing Accessibility categories — and the Annual Housing Awards had eleven winners. Winners of the AIA Housing Award or the AIA/HUD Secretary's Awards are eligible to apply for the AIA Housing Awards Presentation Grant.

Bridge Meadows Beaverton Provides a Supportive Community for Foster Families and Seniors
Opened in August 2017, Bridge Meadows Beaverton provides 41 units of affordable housing to low-income foster families and seniors in Beaverton, Oregon. It is the second intergenerational community developed by nonprofit Bridge Meadows and it consists of a community building, 9 single-family townhomes for foster families, and 32 apartments for seniors aged 55 and over who agree to volunteer in the community.
