The Widening Gap: New Findings on Housing Affordability in America

HUD.GOV HUDUser.gov

Report Acceptance Date: September 1999 (17 pages)

Posted Date: November 17, 2023

This historical publication uses data from the Census Bureau’s American Housing Survey and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to show that the gap between struggling Americans and the nation’s supply of affordable housing was widening. The authors argue that because too many Americans are unable to find decent, safe, and affordable housing the government should expand the Section 8 rental voucher program.
