Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies Report: State of the Nation’s Housing 2021 Release


In June 2021, Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies held a virtual event highlighting the findings of the center’s recently released State of the Nation’s Housing 2021 report. Four panelists discussed the racial disparities evident in the economic hardships associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, examined the implementation of the American Rescue Plan, suggested solutions to the housing supply problem, and addressed other subjects raised by the panel’s moderator.

Innovative Funding Provides Culturally Specific Affordable Housing to Native Americans
Nesika Illahee is a 3-story, 59-unit affordable housing development in the Cully neighborhood of northeast Portland, Oregon. Developed by a partnership between the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, an affordable housing developer, and other Native American community organizations, 20 units at Nesika Illahee give first priority to Siletz tribal members and second priority to members of a federally or state-recognized tribe and Alaskan Natives.

Slightly Tight Housing Markets as Economic Activity Resumes in the Harrisburg HMA
The most recent update article in a series focusing on HUD’s Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses examines the Harrisburg-Carlisle Pennsylvania Housing Market Area (HMA). Unemployment in the southeastern Pennsylvania HMA climbed to 7.7 percent in 2020 as a result of measures taken to stop the spread of COVID-19, though employment is expected to recover with steady gains to nonfarm payrolls predicted over the next 3 years. Both the housing sales and rental markets are slightly tight.
