Philanthropy

Philanthropy plays an essential role in HUD’s work. Foundations’ ability to rapidly launch pilot programs, provide monitoring and evaluation support, and conduct case-studies provides key insights into program design and efficacy. Moreover, because they work across public and private sectors on a diverse range of issues, foundations are natural conveners and provide a critical viewpoint, creating space for voices that are often overlooked.

IPAD works to connect philanthropy’s efforts to HUD’s strategic objectives, developing partnerships that leverage talent and resources on shared goals.

The Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships

IPAD also recognizes excellence in partnerships that have both transformed the relationships between the sectors and led to measurable benefits in housing and community development through it’s annual Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships.

2022 Award

In coordination with the Council on Foundations, HUD announced the 2022 winners of the Secretary's Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships on June 23, 2022. The awards recognize the partnership process and its impact as a community strategy to increase the quality of life for low- and moderate-income residents across all American geographies - urban, suburban, and rural.

HUD's International and Philanthropic Affairs Division (IPAD) has co-hosted these awards with the Council since 2012. These awards serve as the premier collaboration in a fruitful partnership between HUD and the Council. Additionally, the awards are catalytic boosts of support for the winning foundations and are often leveraged to further promote their initiatives and attract new investment.

The winners of the 2022 Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships are:

  • Black Hills Area Community Foundation
  • Destination Home
  • Grand Haven Area Community Foundation
  • JPMorgan Chase Foundation
  • Red Lodge Area Community Foundation
  • San Francisco Foundation
  • St. Croix Foundation for Community Development
